The group of Like-Minded Megadiverse Countries (LMMCs) was created in Cancun in 2002, as a mechanism for consultation and cooperation to promote the interests related to conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity. Although covering only 12% of the world’s surface, the 20 LMMCs hold over 50% of the world’s population and on the order of 70% of its biodiversity. As well, these 20 countries account for 36% of all terrestrial protected areas, and just over 5% of all marine protected areas within national jurisdiction.
